Sarah Wilson of the Columbus Academy girls swimming team will be seeking her fourth Division II state berth when she competes in the district meet Friday, Feb. 17, at Ohio State.

This season, she’s hoping for the added bonus of competing at state with her freshman sister, Abby.

“It’s really important to me to get back to states,” Sarah said. “It’s been a really fun year with having my sister on the team and I just hope we finish strong.”

The top two individuals and relays in each district event automatically advance to the state meet Feb. 22-24 at Branin Natatorium in Canton. Sixteen at-large qualifiers will be selected for each event based on times from all the district meets.

The Wilsons helped the Vikings finish second (223) to Granville (336) in the 18-team home sectional Feb. 11.

The boys team finished second (196) to Granville (252) in the 22-team home sectional.

The girls opened the sectional finals by winning the 200-yard medley relay in 1 minute, 53.8 seconds with the Wilsons joining Abby Brown and Anya Kone’.

The Wilsons again teamed to help Academy finish second (3:46.52) in the 400 freestyle relay. Kone’ and Annie Lee also swam on the relay.

Abby Wilson was second in the 200 individual medley (2:15.79) and 100 backstroke (1:00.43), and Sarah was second in the 500 free (5:26.77) and third in the 200 free (2:01.75).

Sarah was pleased with her team’s showing.

“Granville is so tough; they’re so deep,” she said. “They have a lot of talent. Taking second to them, we take it with a grain of salt. We’re in a good position for (district), so we’ll just come back and swim fast.”

Last season at state, Sarah was 22nd (1:00.45) in the 100 fly and was part of the ninth-place 200 medley relay (1:51.04) and 15th-place 200 free relay (1:42.53).

The boys team qualified nine swimmers for district led by senior Conrad Wuorinen, who finished first in the 200 free (1:49.03) and second in the 100 fly (55.73) at sectional.

Wuorinen, Andy Li, Mitchell Dreisbach and William Westwater won the 400 free relay (3:30.57). Westwater was second in the 100 back (57.99) and part of the second-place 200 free relay (1:36.4) with Dreisbach, Matt Turney and Alec Wuorinen, Conrad’s brother.

“We have a good group of senior leadership that just brings our team together and they do a really nice job of it,” coach Craig Yakscoe said. “If we could get about half of these girls and half of the boys to the state meet that would be really cool.”

•The boys basketball team entered the week looking to clinch at least a share of the MSL-Ohio Division title.

The Vikings played Granville on Feb. 14 and close the regular season at home against Bexley on Friday, Feb. 17.

Before Feb. 14, Academy and Newark Catholic were tied for first at 11-1. Newark Catholic played Heath on Feb. 14 and visits Licking Valley on Friday, Feb. 17.

“It would be really nice,” coach Chris Jones said of winning a league title. “That’s always our first goal every year is to try and get at least a share of the league.”

Academy is seeded second behind Bloom-Carroll for the Division III district tournament.

The Vikings, who entered the week 15-3 overall, will play 22nd-seeded Cardington in the first round Wednesday, Feb. 22, at Central Crossing.

The Pirates, members of the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference, were 6-11 overall before playing Fredericktown on Feb. 14.

“They don’t have a lot of size,” Jones said of Cardington. “They have a nice guard (in senior Cameron Smith) who is probably their best player. They’re really scrappy. They hit the boards really hard, so we’re definitely going to have our work cut out for us.”

The winner will play 16th-seeded Berne Union in the second round Feb. 29 at Central Crossing.

“I didn’t think we would be up that high,” Jones said of the second seed. “It’s a good feeling. To be at that point and getting that kind of respect from your peers is always nice.”
