Led by sophomore Abby Wilson, the Columbus Academy girls swimming and diving team finished seventh (113 points) in the Division II state meet Feb. 20-22 behind champion Gates Mills Hawken (321) as 47 teams scored.
At Branin Natatorium in Canton, Wilson was sixth in the 200-yard freestyle (1 minute, 54.65 seconds) and 10th in the 100 backstroke (58.29).
Wilson, Abby Brown, Anye Kone' and India Sherman were fourth in the 200 medley relay in a program-record 1:47.04, and Wilson, Brown, Sherman and Kone' were fifth in the 200 free relay in a program-record 1:38.05.
Emma Watson was sixth in diving (381.7 points).
Brown was ninth in the 100 butterfly (57.45) and 13th in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.7), and Kone' was 12th in the 50 free (24.68) and 14th in the 100 free (53.72).
Sherman was 16th in the 100 breast (1:09.24).
"A seventh-place girls finish is just fantastic," coach Craig Yakscoe. "They all swam very well and left everything in the pool. They gave it their all and I am very proud of each and every swimmer."
The boys team didn't score at state. Mitchell Dreisbach, Gavin Koerner, Andy Li and Alec Wuorinen were 20th in the 200 free relay in a season-best 1:32.25.
Dayton Oakwood was first (288) and 57 teams scored.
Boys basketball team wins tourney opener
The boys basketball team opened the Division III district tournament by defeating 22nd-seeded East Knox 67-34 on Feb. 23 at home.
Guard Jared Harris scored 14 points and post player Aakaash Paladugu scored 10.
The second-seeded Vikings were 17-5 before playing 21st-seeded Cardington in the second round Feb. 27.
The winner will play sixth-seeded Worthington Christian or 10th-seeded West Jefferson in a district semifinal at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 5, at Delaware.
Academy lost to Worthington Christian 47-44 on Jan. 29.
The semifinal winner will play fourth-seeded Fredericktown, fifth-seeded Grandview, eighth-seeded Ready or 14th-seeded Amanda-Clearcreek in a district final March 7 at the Fairgrounds Coliseum.
Jones earns state wrestling berth
Sophomore Dan Jones earned a berth to the Division III state wrestling tournament by finishing fourth at 195 pounds during the district tournament Feb. 22 and 23 at Duncan Falls Philo.
The top four in each weight class at district advanced to state, which will be held Thursday, Feb. 28, through Saturday, March 2, at Ohio State.
The Vikings finished 32nd (17) at district behind champion Amanda-Clearcreek (147.5) as 54 teams scored.
Junior Jeremy Schroeder was 0-2 at 152.
Bowlers compete in district tourney
Sophomore Max Smith and freshman Aaron Brown competed in the district boys bowling tournament Feb. 22 at HP Lanes.
The top three individuals not on qualifying teams advanced to state Saturday, March 2, at Wayne Webb's Columbus Bowl.
Smith finished eighth (613) and Brown was 67th (477) of 117 competitors. Granville's Jon Massey earned the final individual state berth after finishing fourth (657).
For the girls, Ally Rock was 26th (479) at district Feb. 23 at HP Lanes. North Union's Stormie Jamison's 529 (10th overall) earned her the third of three individual qualifying berths to state Friday, March 1, at Wayne Webb's Columbus Bowl.
