Senior running back Jamal Gladden rushed for 154 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries to lead the second-seeded Zanesville High School football team past top-seeded New Albany 35-28 on Nov. 22 in the Division II, Region 5 final at DeSales.

The teams traded scores for much of the game, but Zanesville senior defensive back Trey Scoles intercepted New Albany senior quarterback Tanner Cline at the Blue Devils’ 47-yard-line with 1 minute, 35 seconds to play in the fourth quarter to secure the victory.

“I saw the receiver stop, so I stepped in front of him,” Scoles said. “Luckily, the ball came my way and I was able to pick it off.”

Zanesville (13-0) advances to play Cincinnati Loveland in a state semifinal Nov. 29 at a site to be determined.

New Albany (11-2) rushed for 302 yards on 54 carries. Senior Trey Quillin ran for 131 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries. Senior running back Wyatt Johnston added 84 yards in 10 carries and senior running back Hayden George had 38 yards in 11 carries.

Cline threw a 16-yard pass to Johnston for the Eagles’ other touchdown.

“Zanesville played great and I hope to watch them win a state championship,” New Albany coach Pat Samanich said. “We had some drives in the third quarter that we should have capitalized on. To win football in November, you have to run the ball and they were able to do that.”

Zanesville quarterback Thomas Wibbeler was 11 of 20 passing for 184 yards and three touchdowns. Senior wide receiver Dar Stanford had six receptions for 140 yards and one touchdown and senior wide receiver J.T. McFarland had five catches for 50 yards and one score.

Cline was 2-for-7 passing with one touchdown and two interceptions and senior defensive back Joe Siegenthaler had an interception for the Eagles.
