The Columbus Academy boys swimming and diving team prepared for the Division II district meet Friday, Feb. 14, at Ohio State by winning a sectional title Feb. 8 at home.
The Vikings finished first (270) ahead of runner-up Granville (245) as 18 teams scored.
Brian Burke, Nate Goldfarb, Mitchell Dreisbach and Dylan Warren opened the meet by winning the 200-yard medley relay (1 minute, 45.13 seconds), and Goldfarb won the 100 breaststroke (1:00.57).
The girls team finished third (212) behind champion Columbus School for Girls (273) as 20 teams scored.
Abby Wilson, Lauren Cullen, India Sherman and Sarah Campbell were second in the 200 freestyle relay (1:44.02), and Sherman was second in the 100 breast (1:10.41).
At district, the top two placers in each swimming event, the top boys diver and the top three girls divers advance to state Wednesday, Feb. 19, through Feb. 21 at Branin Natatorium in Canton. In addition, 16 at-large state berths will be awarded for each swimming event based on district times statewide.
Boys basketball team wins three in a row
The boys basketball team had a three-game winning streak before playing London on Feb. 11.
The Vikings were 6-12 overall and 3-8 in the MSL-Ohio Division.
Academy defeated Madison Christian 74-39 on Feb. 6 at home. Jon Kornberg scored 18 points, Ryan Alexander had 13, Scott Mackenzie scored 11 and Brett Trimbur added 10.
The Vikings defeated West Jefferson 51-41 on Feb. 8 at home. Kornberg scored 17 points, Charlie Watters had 12 and Max Bechtel added 11.
Academy is seeded 13th in the Division III district tournament and will play host to 15th-seeded Galion Northmor in the first round Feb. 21.
The Vikings have regular-season games remaining at Madison Plains (Friday, Feb. 14), at Grandview (Saturday, Feb. 15) and at Johnstown (Tuesday, Feb. 18). In the first round of league play, Academy defeated Madison Plains 71-48 on Jan. 23 and lost to Grandview 75-39 on Dec. 21.
Girls basketball team preps for postseason
The girls basketball team was 7-10 overall and 3-10 in the MSL-Ohio before playing London on Feb. 12.
The Vikings lost at home to Madison Plains 50-35 on Feb. 7 as Zaria McBride scored 15 points.
Academy is seeded 16th in the Division III district tournament and will play at 11th-seeded Northmor in the first round Monday, Feb. 17. The winner plays 15th-seeded Bexley in the second round Feb. 20 at the home of the better seed.
Wrestling team set for sectional
The wrestling team will compete in a Division III sectional Friday, Feb. 14, and Saturday, Feb. 15, at Cardington.
The top four finishers in each weight class advance to the district tournament Feb. 21 and 22 at Heath.
The Vikings finished seventh (84.5) in the MSL-Ohio tournament Feb. 1 at Bexley behind West Jefferson (214.5), London (173.5), Madison Plains (152), Whitehall (160.5), Bexley (128.5) and Grandview (101) and ahead of Harvest Prep (15).
Sam Wittman (126 pounds) and Dan Jones (220) both placed second.
Boys bowlers compete in league tournament
The boys bowling team finished 11th (2,907) of 12 teams in the Central Ohio High School Bowling Conference Roll-off tournament Feb. 8 at Holiday Lanes, behind champion Teays Valley (3,581).
Andrew Kennedy finished sixth (603) of 75 bowlers.
The boys also finished fourth in the MSL tournament Feb. 1 at Wayne Webb's Columbus Bowl behind champion Teays Valley. Max Smith and Aaron Brown were named second-team all-league and Andrew Kennedy was honorable mention.
The girls team finished third in the MSL tournament behind champion Whitehall as Emma Farrenkopf was first-team all-league and Leya Mohsin was second-team all-league.
The Vikings will compete in the Division II sectional tournament Friday, Feb. 14, at Sawmill Lanes. The top 14 boys teams and top 14 boys not on qualifying teams and the top 12 girls teams and top 12 girls not on qualifying teams advance to district Feb. 21 at HP Lanes.
