The Columbus Academy boys and girls swimming and diving teams each finished third in the Division II district meet Feb. 14 at Ohio State.
The boys (213 points) finished behind champion Dover (259) as 41 teams scored and the girls (324) finished behind champion Columbus School for Girls (413) as 30 teams scored.
The top two placers in each swimming event advanced to state Feb. 19 through Friday, Feb. 21, at Branin Natatorium in Canton. Also, 16 at-large berths were awarded in each swimming event based on district statewide times.
Earning automatic berths for the girls team were Abby Wilson in the 200-yard freestyle (1 minute, 51.26 seconds) and India Sherman in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.9). Both finished second.
Also advancing were Sherman, Sarah Campbell, Laura Cullen and Anya Kone' with the second-place 200 medley relay (1:50.73) and Wilson, Kone', Sherman and Sydney Brault with the second-place 200 free relay (1:38.28).
Earning at-large berths were Wilson in the 100 backstroke (58.6, third at district), Campbell in the 200 individual medley (2:13.77, fifth) and 100 back (54.19, fourth) and Wilson, Brault, Cullen and Campbell in the 400 free relay (3:37.98, third).
Earning at-large berths for the boys team were Nate Goldfarb in the 200 individual medley (2:01.48, third) and 100 breast (58.68, fourth), and Goldfarb, Mitchell Dreisbach, Gavin Koerner and Dylan Warren in the 200 medley relay (1:41.28, third).
Boys basketball team gaining momentum
The boys basketball team took a six-game winning streak into its regular-season finale Feb. 18 against Johnstown.
The Vikings were 9-12 overall and finished 6-8 in the MSL-Ohio Division.
Academy is seeded 13th in the Division III district tournament and plays host to 15th-seeded Galion Northmor on Friday, Feb. 21. The winner plays at second-seeded Ready on Wednesday, Feb. 26, with the winner playing sixth-seeded Centerburg or 16th-seeded East Knox in a semifinal March 4 at Hilliard Davidson.
The Vikings won at Grandview 55-43 on Feb. 15. Jonathan Kornberg scored 22 points and Ryan Alexander had 17.
Kornberg scored 21 points and Max Bechtel added 14 in a 68-47 win at Madison Plains on Feb. 14.
The Vikings also defeated London 60-57 on Feb. 11 at home. Kornberg scored 17 points, Alexander had 13 and Scott Mackenzie added 11.
Wrestler advances to district tourney
Dan Jones of the wrestling team advanced to the Division III district tournament by winning a sectional title at 220 pounds.
He will compete Friday, Feb. 21, and Saturday, Feb. 22, at Heath.
The top four finishers in each weight class advance to state Feb. 27-March 1 at Ohio State.
In the 19-team sectional Feb. 15 at Cardington, the Vikings finished 14th (33) behind champion Hartley (190.5).
Bowling teams advance to district
The boys and girls bowling teams each advanced to the Division II district tournament Saturday, Feb. 22, at HP Lanes.
The top three boys teams and top three individuals not on qualifying teams advance to state Feb. 28 at Wayne Webb's Columbus Bowl. The top two girls teams and top two individuals not on qualifying teams advance to state March 1 at the same site.
The boys finished fifth (3,778) of 30 teams in the Sawmill Lanes sectional Feb. 14 behind champion Buckeye Valley (4,195). The top 14 teams advanced to district.
Max Smith led the Vikings, finishing seventh of 170 bowlers with a 636 series. Andrew Kennedy was 35th (548), Sean Reagan was 37th (544) and Aaron Brown was 46th (524).
The girls were 11th (2,797) of 21 teams at sectional behind champion Buckeye Valley (3,572). The top 12 teams advanced to district.
Allie Wallace was 12th of 126 bowlers with a 499 series. Leya Mohsin was 39th (420), Emma Farrenkopf was 43rd (414) and Yasmine Kashubeck was 54th (394).
Girls basketball team opens tournament
The 16th-seeded girls basketball team was 7-11 before playing at 11th-seeded Northmor in the first round of the Division III district tournament Feb. 17.
The winner plays 15th-seeded Bexley in the second round Thursday, Feb. 20, with that winner advancing to a semifinal Tuesday, Feb. 25, at Granville.
The district final is March 1 at Granville.
