Columbus police followed a suspected bank robber's tracks through the snow and caught him -- red-handed -- inside his motel room.

According to an FBI report, a man wearing sunglasses and a hooded sweatshirt entered Chase Bank, 5681 Cleveland Ave., during Wednesday's snowstorm.

The man handed the teller a note stating that he had a gun and demanding money.

The teller complied with his request, handing him a bag of money containing a dye pack, the report said.

Columbus police responding to the robbery followed the man's footprints through the snow to the Intown Suites, 2420 E. Dublin-Granville Road.

After discovering which room the man entered, officers found Jay B. Thompson, 41, inside trying to wash red dye off of the money and himself, the report said.

Thompson was charged with robbing the bank.
