The long-anticipated opening of the Menards Mega Store at 1805 Morse Road, on the site of the former Northland Mall, is scheduled for Tuesday, April 12.
Officials with the big-box home-improvement store chain, based in Eau Claire, Wis., made the announcement a week in advance.
"We are very excited to open this beautiful new store in Columbus," corporate spokesman Jeff Abbott said in a prepared statement. "This new store is another example of our strong commitment to providing the best in home improvement goods and services plus shopping convenience in Ohio."
During a groundbreaking ceremony for the store last May, Columbus Mayor Michael B. Coleman extracted a commitment from corporate officials on hand for the event that he would be their first customer.
The city's part in bringing the chain to Columbus involved offering Menards a 75-percent, 10-year tax abatement on real estate improvements.
Upon completion of the project, Columbus will have invested more than $38 million on redevelopment of the Northland Village site and infrastructure improvements on Morse Road.
"We are really looking forward to opening the doors to this beautiful new store," Columbus Menards general manager Joey Williams said in the announcement. "It was built in our largest format with a full-service lumberyard, large garden center, several fabulous departments, great displays, wide aisles plus high-quality guest service."
Community leaders view the decision by Menards officials to locate their first Columbus store in what was once a major commercial corridor as a step in the direction of resurrection, following the dire days in the aftermath of Northland Mall's closing in 2002.
"Frankly, if it weren't for the neighborhood, we would not be here," Coleman said during the ceremonial groundbreaking.
Menards carries name-brand merchandise, tools for any job and "state-of-the-art, in-store computers to help guests design their special projects," according to the announcement.
The new Columbus store will also carry name-brand appliances, pet products, lawn and garden supplies and groceries.
The family-owned company was started in 1960.
Menards currently operates 259 home improvement stores in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, Wisconsin and Wyoming.
The announcement stated that grand opening celebration events would begin later in April, including special deals on merchandise, prize giveaways, in-store demonstrations and appearance by celebrities.
