Presenter after presenter at last week's Northland Community Council awards banquet spoke about what the people they were honoring are to their neighbors: helpful, caring, tireless in their commitment to improving their communities.

John Kirkpatrick of the Sharon Woods Civic Association took the unusual approach of describing what his award recipients aren't.

"They are not summer soldiers and sunshine patriots," Kirkpatrick said of Donnell and Charlotte Schneider, Pat Wood and Randy Sprouse.

The annual event at Villa Milano Banquet and Conference Center on March 23 provided civic association leaders an opportunity to single out a few of the people who provide the "glue" that helps bind their subdivisions together.

Mindy Drayer, weekend anchor at WCMH-TV, was the emcee.

"What you have in the Northland area you should be very, very proud of," she said prior to the awards presentations. "If more people did what you do by volunteering, think how much better central Ohio would be, Ohio would be, our nation would be."

Musical entertainment was provided by the members of the Northland High School String Quartet, Dakota Parrish on violin, Kay Shanda on violin, Ashleey Cromartie on viola and Emily Likens on cello.

Sponsors for the evening were Able Roofing, Krieger Ford, Yogi's Hoagies, the Inkwell, Flowerama and Bob Daniels GMC Buick Truck.

Former NCC vice president Bob Thurman presented the awards to the firefighter of the year and police officer of the year.

This year's firefighter honoree is Kylie Salvador, who joined the Columbus Division of Fire on February 2008.

Rick Crum, who joined the Division of Police in April 1988 and has been on patrol in the Northland area since 1990, was the other safety force award recipient.
