A roundtable of experts will give all sides to two hot issues: Genetically modified food and sustainability.
Food Dialogues: Ohio will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 15 at the Center of Science and Industry, 333 W. Broad St.
Part of a national campaign, Food Dialogues: Ohio, is being presented by U. S. Farmers and Ranchers Alliance, Ohio Soybean Council and Ohio Farm Bureau Federation.
Panelists from farmers to grocers to registered dieticians will offer opinions about the topics, said Jennifer Coleman, spokeswoman for the Ohio Soybean Council.
"No matter where you are in the U.S., people have questions about their food. It's as simple as that," Coleman said. "Sometimes they don't know where to go to get good information."
The event is open by invitation only, so the entire discussion will be broadcast live online at fooddialogues.com.
"When it comes to the Internet, this is just an opportunity for anyone from Ohio, or anywhere in the United States for that matter, to tune in and listen to the conversation," Coleman said.
Joel Riley, radio host of WTVN-610 AM, will moderate the event.
The first discussion, "Biotechnology (GMOs) and Your Food," will be held from 11 a.m. to noon. It will address what effect genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, have on the environment and long-term health, and what role science plays when addressing issues tied to food.
The panel will break for lunch and resume the discourse at 1 p.m. on the topic of "Sustainability and Your Food," which will center on how sustainable our food production system is, what effects it has on the environment and the economy, and what practices are being used to ensure a safe, sustainable food supply.
"These are two topics people have a lot of questions about and people on the panel are very excited to present their views on it," Coleman said. "This is going to be a good productive conversation."
