J.T. Blubaugh scored four goals and Matthew Chadwick added a goal and three assists, but the DeSales High School boys lacrosse team lost to Cincinnati Mariemont 16-9 in a Division II state semifinal June 5 at Wilmington College.
The Warriors (14-6) took command with four goals in the game’s first 9 minutes, 22 seconds, but the Stallions (11-5) dominated the second period. DeSales scored four unanswered goals — two by Blubaugh, a senior attacker, and one each from sophomore attacker Nick Cannon and senior midfielder Alex Musci, to make it 7-5 with 4:09 left in the first half. But Mariemont added a goal moments later for an 8-5 lead and the Stallions never got closer.
“(Mariemont) took advantage of some unsettled situations early,” Stallions coach Matt Triplet said. “They were whistle-ready and we got off to a slow start. We finally broke through some spots in their defense in the second quarter and got some things together.”
Cannon finished with two goals and freshman attacker Nick Musci added one for DeSales.
Junior attacker Cal Fries had five goals and three assists to lead Mariemont, which will play Rocky River in the state championship game at 2 p.m. June 8 at Upper Arlington. Rocky River, which DeSales defeated 8-6 in last year’s state final, beat Hunting Valley University School 11-8 in the other state semifinal June 5.
Sophomore attacker Connor Bortz and junior attacker Macko Saffin each added three goals for the Warriors.
Chadwick, a senior attacker, scored DeSales’ final goal with about five minutes left.
Junior goalkeeper Ben Dumm made 12 saves for the Stallions. Mariemont goalie Sam Long stopped 13 shots.
