Tennis teams set for City coaches tourney


The Beechcroft and Brookhaven high school boys tennis teams are preparing to compete in the City League coaches tournament, which will be held Monday, May 5, at Columbus South and Linden-McKinley and Tuesday, May 6, at Wolfe Park.

The Cougars beat Brookhaven 5-0 on April 23, but lost to Columbus West 4-1 on April 24. They were 3-4 overall and 2-1 in the City League-North Division before playing league-foes Mifflin (April 28) and Centennial (April 30) and non-league Franklin Heights (April 29).

Entering the week, Daniel Bishoff was 5-2 at first singles and John Stone (second singles), Mario Lopez-Gomez (third singles), Branden Matney and Damian Echols (first doubles) and Ibrahim Sesay and Elijah Mix (second doubles) all had three wins.

Brookhaven was 0-3 overall and in the City-North before playing Mifflin on April 30.

Vikings softball team returns to action

The Northland softball team had a three-game winning streak snapped April 23 when it returned to City-North action with a 17-3 loss to Whetstone.

The Vikings were 3-5 overall and 3-3 in the league before playing Columbus East on April 28 and Brookhaven on April 30.

Northland, which lost a league game to Centennial 11-1 on April 25, beat East 14-0 on April 8, Brookhaven 20-18 on April 10 and Beechcroft 11-7 on April 11 for its first three wins.
