Beechcroft, Brookhaven await tennis tourney

The Beechcroft High School boys tennis team enters the Division II sectional tournament feeling good about its recent play.

On May 5, the Cougars beat Centennial 3-2 to finish 5-2 in the City League-North Division. They were 6-4 overall before closing the regular season May 14 against Jonathan Alder.

Beechcroft is competing in a sectional Thursday, May 15, and Saturday, May 17, at Columbus School for Girls. Josh Bishoff, John Stone and Mario Lopez-Gomez will play singles and the teams of Damian Echols and Branden Matney and Elijah Mix and Ibrahim Sesay will play doubles.

Brookhaven is competing in a Division I sectional Thursday, May 15, and Saturday, May 17, at Pickerington Central. Emmanuel Osafo, Sudhir Sharma and Bikash Upreti will play singles and the teams of Mike Oettinger and Dina Tiwari and of Benod Sinchuri and Dhaka Khatiwada will play doubles.

Local baseball teams play in tourneys

The 19th-seeded Brook-haven baseball team played the final home game in program history May 13 against 21st-seeded Columbus South in the first round of the Division II district tournament.

The winner plays Thursday, May 15, at top-seeded Bloom-Carroll in a second-round game.

Also in Division II, 25th-seeded Beechcroft played at fifth-seeded Licking Valley in a first-round game May 13. The winner plays ninth-seeded DeSales or 22nd-seeded Eastmoor Academy in a second-round game Thursday, May 15, at the site of the better-seeded team.

Northland, which is seeded 38th in Division I, played at 33rd-seeded Westerville North in a first-round game May 12. The winner played at sixth-seeded Marysville in a second-round game May 14, with the winner to play Pickerington North, Westerville South or Dublin Jerome in a district semifinal Monday, May 19, at Grove City.

Softball teams open postseason

The 17th-seeded Beechcroft softball team played at 10th-seeded Centennial in the first round of the Division II district tournament May 12.

The winner played May 14 at second-seeded Jonathan Alder in a second-round game. That winner plays Heath, Marion-Franklin or Columbus International in a district semifinal Monday, May 19, at Pickerington North.

Also in Division II, 15th-seeded Brookhaven played May 14 at seventh-seeded Hartley in a second-round game.

The winner meets Lakewood, Eastmoor or Hamilton Township in a district semifinal Monday, May 19, at Pickerington North.

Northland, which is the 41st seed in Division I, played a first-round district tournament game May 13 at 39th-seeded Reynoldsburg.

The winner plays Thursday, May 15, at second-seeded Delaware.
