The FirstMerit Bank branch inside the Kroger Co. store at 2090 Crown Plaza Drive, near the intersection of Bethel and Dierker roads, will relocate to the site of a building that's to be demolished within the shopping center.
Fred Hawk, vice president and project director for Akron-based FirstMerit Corp., paid what he called a "courtesy" visit on Northwest Civic Association trustees at last week's monthly meeting.
Although a demolition permit for the existing structure -- an adult care center -- has not been formally requested, Hawk said he wanted the board members to be aware of what was being proposed.
The new branch would be 2,000 square feet, smaller than the existing building, and would have two drive-up lanes, Hawk said.
In response to a question from board member Dave Shaw, Hawk said the entrance and exit to the bank would be from within the shopping plaza, and not directly onto either Bethel or Dierker.
Corporate officials have "preliminary ideas" at this point regarding the replacement branch, Hawk said, adding that he will be returning to a future NWCA session regarding signs for the new bank.
Instead of a vote on approving the demolition permit once one is taken out, Graphics and Zoning Committee Chairwoman Rosemarie Lisko just asked the other trustees to indicate if they had any objection to the corporate plans.
"We view it as an improvement to the corner," Hawk said.
He added that officials hope to have the branch open by the spring of 2014.
