Hockey team enjoying program's best start

The Watterson High School hockey team is having its best season in its four-year history.

The Eagles were 3-10-1 overall and 3-7 in the Capital Hockey Conference-Blue Division before playing Dublin Coffman on Jan. 13. They were a combined 1-58 overall and 0-39-0-2 in the CHC-Blue in their first three seasons.

The Eagles picked up their first league win this season Nov. 30, beating Dublin Scioto 8-5. They then beat Olentangy 3-1 on Dec. 21 as forward Sam Magee had two goals and forward Grant Stover scored one and defeated Olentangy again two days later, 7-2, as Magee had four goals, forwards Denis McPhillips, Zac McKenna and Derek Petrucci each scored one and goaltender Aaron King had 25 saves.

Despite being able to fill only seven of the 14 weight classes, the wrestling team has had some moderate success in tournaments, including the Ready Winter Classic.

The Eagles scored 39 points in the 22-team event held Dec. 27 and 28 to finish 15th. Nicky DiCarlo placed fourth at 152 pounds, Mark Guza was fifth at 126, Mike Guza was sixth at 126 and Ben Kring was eighth at 120.
