The Watterson High School boys basketball team went 3-0 last week.
The Eagles defeated Worthington Christian 48-47 on Jan. 18 to improve to 10-1 overall and were on a five-game winning streak into their non-league matchup against Beechcroft on Jan. 23.
Guard Cody Calhoun made two free throws with 1.4 seconds left for the tying and winning points against Worthington Christian. He went 6-for-7 from the foul line in the fourth quarter and finished with a game-high 15 points.
Post players Bryan Jackson and Matt Hughes added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Also last week, the Eagles beat Newark Catholic 55-49 on Jan. 14 and defeated Hilliard Darby 65-41 on Jan. 15.
Watterson, which is 2-0 in the CCL, will travel to Hartley on Friday, Jan. 25, for a league contest. The Hawks beat Ready 42-33 on Jan. 18 to improve to 4-0 in the CCL.
Girls basketball team on a roll
The girls basketball team was 7-7 overall and carried a three-game winning streak into its game against Gahanna on Jan. 23.
Watterson improved to 4-1 in the CCL by defeating Hartley 49-41 on Jan. 19 behind 16 points from guard Kayla Cook and 11 from post player Alexis Mayle. The Eagles converted 17 of 24 free throws in the contest.
Watterson will resume CCL play Wednesday, Jan. 30, at Ready. The Eagles defeated the Silver Knights 47-29 on Dec. 19 behind 10 points from both Mayle and post player Emma Nikolai. Lauren Ruth, a 5-foot-9 forward, led Ready with eight points.
The Silver Knights are 1-2 in the CCL heading into games against Columbus School for Girls on Friday, Jan. 25, and DeSales on Saturday, Jan. 26.
