In its first state tournament appearance, the Watterson High School boys basketball team defeated Kettering Alter 53-42 in a Division II semifinal March 21 at Ohio State.
Watterson improved to 27-1 and will face Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary in a state final at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, March 23, at Ohio State.
“We’re thrilled to get a win in our first time playing here,” Watterson coach Vince Lombardo said. “Our guys did an outstanding job of executing our plan and we competed extremely hard.”
Watterson post player Matt Hughes racked up game highs in points (21), rebounds (10) and blocks (three).
“(Post player) Bryan Jackson was in foul trouble and we needed a presence inside,” Hughes said. “So I stepped up as much as I could to help my team.”
Forward Matt Lehmann added 14 points and five rebounds and guard Cody Calhoun scored nine points, as Watterson stretched its team-record winning streak to 22 games.
Guard Jaaron Simmons scored 17 points to lead Alter, which finished 21-6.
