Liberty Township Trustees gathered Friday morning to plant a tree in honor of Arbor Day.

The tree was a gift from the Mid Ohio Regional Planning Commission (MORPC) in honor of the township receiving the William C. Habig award for its participation in the Central Ohio Green Pact.

A Swamp White Oak was planted in the south end of the lawn at Fire Station No. 322 on Sawmill Parkway.

Liberty Township and the city of Powell were among 15 local signatories of the green pact, which was signed last year.

All of the participating communities received the Habig award for environmental leadership.

The pact was finalized last year by the Central Ohio Mayors and City Managers Association, to encourage communitywide ways to conserve energy, reduce pollution and waste and create greener governments.

The pact doesn't create laws or mandate compliance with the pact.

Instead, it's a series of suggestions on ways communities can become environmentally friendly.

Liberty joined Powell, Dublin, Westerville, Worthington, Upper Arlington and Columbus in the pact.
