Incoming Olentangy kindergartners will have a new schedule next year, which school officials said will increase instructional time and save the district nearly $100,000.

The Olentangy school board on Jan. 27 heard a report from Jeff Brown, executive director of elementary learning and interim superintendent, who said the 2009-10 schedule will eliminate the half-day students usually attended every Friday.

Instead, kindergartners will attend on alternating Fridays, going to class three days one week and two the next.

For example, if a kindergarten student was on the Monday-Wednesday schedule, they will go to school for full days Monday, Wednesday and Friday one week and then only Monday and Wednesday the following week. The same schedule would apply for children on the Tuesday-Thursday schedule.

The "alternating Friday" schedule will add about 8.5 additional days of instructional time by eliminating the half-day Friday schedule previously used, Brown said.

By eliminating the extra transportation on those half days, the district is expected to realize about $99,219 in fuel savings next year, he said.

Kindergarten registration will begin as soon as redistricting plans are announced.

The district expects to announce redistricting plans in February, said Andy Kerr, director of facilities.

Incoming Superintendent Wade Lucas has reviewed proposed redistricting plans, but ultimately the decision will fall to Brown, who was appointed as interim superintendent by the board on Tuesday.

Lucas will begin with the district March 23. Jennifer Hooie, who has been interim superintendent, resigned and will leave Feb. 16

While the school board hears input from residents, redistricting decisions are made by the district superintendent, and the board doesn't vote on the plans.

The board will receive a presentation on the final redistricting plans, likely at one of the two February board meetings.

The next board meeting will be 6 p.m. Feb. 10 at district headquarters, 814 Shanahan Road.
