The Olentangy school district last week held a reception for new superintendent Wade Lucas before the regularly scheduled board meeting.

Board president Julie Wagner-Feasel welcomed Lucas, who officially took over district leadership.

One of Lucas' first tasks was a meeting with Wagner-Feasel and state Rep. Kris Jordan to discuss concerns how potential changes in the state's school funding formula will affect Olentangy.

Lucas will attend six informal meet-and-greet gatherings throughout the district to meet parents and community members:

March 31 at 6 p.m. at Olentangy Liberty High School, 3584 Home Road in Powell.

April 1 at 6 p.m. at Olentangy Shanahan Middle School, 814 Shanahan Road in Lewis Center.

April 7 at 6 p.m. at Olentangy High School, 675 Lewis Center Road in Lewis Center.

April 21 at 6 p.m. at Olentangy Orange High School, 2840 E. Orange Road in Lewis Center.

May 5 at 5:30 p.m. at Olentangy Hyatts Middle School, 6885 Sawmill Parkway in Powell.

May 19 at 6 p.m. at Olentangy Orange Middle School, 2680 E. Orange Road in Lewis Center.

Jeff Brown -- executive director of elementary education who briefly served as interim superintendent -- welcomed Lucas to the district, and thanked the staff and community members for supporting him in his short tenure as interim superintendent.

Brown will assist Lucas with the transition through the end of April, before returning full time to his previous position with elementary education.

In other business, Brown reported that since registration opened earlier this month, 1,056 kindergartners have registered for the 2009-10 school year.

The district has projected 1,248 kindergarteners will register.

"We fully anticipate through the summer to at least meet that (projection), Brown said.

The board also:

Approved a $273,369 contract with Tom Sexton and Associates for "loose furnishings" including desks, chairs and bookcases at Freedom Trail Elementary School, which is set to open next year.

Heard a construction update on the progress of a new bus facility, Freedom Trail Elementary and renovations at Olentangy High School.

The next board meeting will be held at 6 p.m. April 14 at district headquarters, 814 Shanahan Road. The board also has scheduled a work session with Lucas at 6 p.m. April 9, also at the Shanahan location.
