The Community Action Organization of Delaware, Madison and Union Counties has been awarded $2.35-million in stimulus funds for its Home Weatherization Assistance Program aimed at helping families insulate their homes.
The stimulus funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act are coming through the Ohio Department of Development.
HWAP is a federally funded program which helps eligible residents make their homes more energy efficient through home insulation, furnace repair or replacement and health and safety improvements
Executive director Jim Cesa said that, in the past, Community Action had enough money to help 75 homes a year in the three counties. The stimulus funds will help weatherize 236 homes over the next 22 months, he said.
Under the federal stimulus guidelines, households at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty limit are eligible for Home Weatherization Assistance Program assistance. That means a household of three could have an income of up to $36,620 a year, while a family of four could have an income in excess of $44,000 and still qualify for HWAP assistance.
Those interested in the weatherization program are asked to contact Community Action at (740) 369-3184. An application is required, and a meeting and inspection will be scheduled.
To be eligible, the home cannot have been weatherized in the last 10 years. Cesa said the work crews can weatherize between two and two-and-a-half homes a week.
