The American Red Cross of Greater Columbus recently recognized its outstanding volunteers at the group's annual meeting.

Two Lewis Center residents were honored for their service. Debra Storm was awarded for her work in the health and safety services. Storm served as event coordinator for the first aid services team for 12 years and is a leader in providing emergency first aid to spectators and guests at special events.

Betsy Blake was recognized as volunteer fundraiser of the year. Blake was chair of the 21st annual American Red Cross Golf Classic in August 2008. The event raised more than $275,000 to support Red Cross programs and services.

Marisa Schnaith, a 2005 Olentangy Liberty High School graduate and a 2009 graduate of Miami University, has left for two years of service in Mongolia as a member of the Peace Corps.

Schnaith, who triple-majored in political science, Spanish and Latin American Studies, plans to attend law school. She studied abroad in Argentina, Spain and Guatemala while at Miami.

During her service, which could be anywhere from the steppes near Russia to the Gobi Desert, Schnaith will teach English to pre-service teachers.

After her first 10 weeks, during which she'll stay with a host family, she'll live on her own in a traditional Mongolian structure called a gurt.
