Prestige Music Studios Inc. will hold a grand re-opening 4:30-8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 8, at 46 and 50 Village Pointe Drive, Powell.

The music lessons business is doubling in size, from 2,500 square feet to 5,000, said company president Sara Marie Brenner.

"We opened in 2006 with only a few dozen students. Since then, we have grown to a company of several hundred students taking private lessons here in our studio or in their central Ohio homes," Brenner wrote in an e-mail.

The business offers traditional and Suzuki style lessons for various musical instruments. It also offers a children's singing, dancing and acting program, "Prestige Pops."

"'Prestige Pops' is one of our most popular group classes. The students from that program performed in the Powell Festival in 2009 and 2010, and we hope to do it again next year, too. We also have a 'RockShop' program for students interested in playing jazz, blues and rock. We have an Irish fiddle workshop that is fairly new, and we will be introducing additional ensemble programs," Brenner wrote.

Brenner, a lifelong resident of the Powell area, started piano lessons at age 3 and began teaching private piano lessons at age 12.

"I rode my bike around the Powell area putting fliers on mailboxes. By the time I was in high school, I had 85 students," Brenner wrote, noting she has owned and sold two other home-lessons-only music lessons companies.

"In 2006, I started looking for an opportunity to open a 'brick and mortar' company, and an opportunity came available in the space where we are today for me to take over a lease of a tenant needing to leave, and the rest is history," Brenner wrote.

Asked what advice she would give to people thinking of starting a small business, Brenner wrote, "Be prepared to work, work, work! I had years of 100-hour work weeks doing nothing but working in my office. I am fortunate now to have time to give back to the community through volunteer opportunities, which is something I believe is important for all business owners to do."

Hiring "great people" has been essential to the success of her business, Brenner said.

"We have worked very hard to select the best of the best. We are already a cut above because all of our teachers here have degrees in their field, where other companies do not guarantee that. However, the fact that we have many people applying for one position really gives us the opportunity to be selective and choose the applicants who are the best fit for the company and who will serve our clients well," Brenner wrote.

Another important aspect of her business approach is to "give music students of every age the opportunity to enjoy playing music for a lifetime."

The business' grand reopening event will include one-day registration specials, tours, refreshments and student performances.

Brenner also serves on the Powell City Council, to which she was elected to a four-year term in November 2009.
