Gretchen Curtis will present the program "The Apron: An American Icon" on Monday, Feb. 7 at a meeting of the Women's Club of Powell.

The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at the Powe l United Methodist Church, 825 E. Olentangy St. Guests are welcome.

Curtis will discuss both the importance of the piece of cloth worn for decades by American women and the influence the apron had in the selling of appliances in the 1940s and 1950s. She'll display several aprons and will invite members to bring an apron that has special meaning in their lives.

Monty Chase will present a program at 7 pm for the Powell Liberty Historical Society on Monday, Feb. 14.

His topic is "Remembering William Knauss and Past Memorial Ceremonies at Camp Chase Confederate Cemetery 1895-1902." This wounded Union soldier made a commitment to honor the 2,260 Confederates who died at Camp Chase in Columbus during the Civil War.

Camp Chase was named in honor of Salmon Portland Chase, secretary of treasury under Lincoln. Monty Chase discovered that he and Salmon Chase share a common ancestor, Aquila Chase, who came to America in 1639.

This year is the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War.

The Liberty Township Powell YMCA will hold its third annual Women's Wellness Day from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 13.

According to a news release, Michele Cannell, YMCA health and wellness director, said the day "will allow women to receive some much-needed pampering."

Wellness Day options include 15-minute personal training consultations, skin consultations, yoga classes, Pilates classes, chair massages, nutrition consultations and a self-defense class, which will be taught by a retired police officer.

The fee is $50 per person. Pre-registration is required. The event is open to the whole community; YMCA membership is not required.
