The Powell Police Department will host a National Night Out celebration from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 2, on the Village Green Park, 47 Hall St., Powell.

National Night Out events are hosted by police departments around the country. The evening is designed to foster crime-prevention awareness and community spirit, said Jeff Robinson, city spokesperson.

The free event is "designed to heighten crime- and drug-prevention awareness, generate support for and participation in local anti-crime programs, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police community partnerships and allow the citizens of the community an opportunity to meet the individuals that serve them," said Sgt. Scott Roach, event organizer.

This year's event will have an ice cream social theme, a press release from the city said.

"Graeter's, Rita's and Menchies will all be on hand, giving out free ice cream, Italian ice and frozen yogurt, respectively," it said.

"What goes better with summer than ice cream?" Roach said. "This year's ice cream social will give everyone a chance to come and socialize with their neighbors (and) meet their local and federal law enforcement agencies while at the same time cooling off with free Italian ice, frozen yogurt and ice cream."

Other activities include a performance by the band, Six Pack Theory. This is the band's third time performing at the event.

The Citizen Police Academy Alumni Group will run a coloring booth for children ages 7 and younger and a solve-the-crime table. The crime-solving activity "was a big hit last year," so they decided to do it again," Roach said.

The city's parks and recreation department will provide various sports activities such as cornhole, wiffle ball and other summer activities.

"We will also have Liberty Township Fire Department on hand with their smoke house, and several federal agencies - FBI, Secret Service and U.S. marshal - will be on hand to answer questions and hand out information," Roach said.

Twenty-eight years ago, the National Association of Town Watch started the event that promotes police-community partnerships, crime, drug and violence prevention, safety and neighborhood unit, the press release said.

Powell has hosted the event since 2008.
