Olentangy Liberty Tree Elementary School art teacher Jonathan Juravich and Olivia Langwasser, a fifth-grader at Olentangy Cheshire Elementary, have a common goal - raising funds and community awareness for the fight against leukemia and lymphoma.

Langwasser, in her third year of defeating leukemia, nominated Juravich, of Clintonville, to be "Man of the Year" for the central Ohio chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). Langwasser previously attended the school where Juravich teaches.

"He was supportive of me when I was sick, and there's also another girl at the school who's sick and he's very supportive of her and other kids with disabilities, too," Langwasser said. "He knew we were further behind than the other kids and he helped us catch up on (the school work)."

Langwasser's mother, Taryn Langwasser, agrees, "Mr. J is so plugged in and so caring, and he's very involved in the community and the life of his students and making the world a better place. He's really an awesome guy."

"I'm honored to say that I am a candidate to be Man of the Year," Juravich said in a written statement.

He needs community support to beat three other men nominated for the award. Taryn Langwasser also said eight women are competing for "Woman of the Year," a separate category.

LLS project manager Cassy Allyn said the winner will be the man who raises the most money during a 10-week fundraising crusade ending May 11.

"Every dollar I raise is a vote to fight cancer," Juravich said. "I am asking (the community) to join me in this ambitious campaign to reach my goal of $50,000. Together we can lovingly support current patients and fight to end blood cancers."
