Powell residents can join the local police department for an evening of free food, fun and crime-prevention education next week.

The fifth annual Powell National Night Out event is set from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 7, at Village Green Park, adjacent to the Municipal Building, 47 Hall St.

Attendees can enjoy free pizza and Rita's Italian Ice while learning about crime, drug and violence prevention, as well as safety and neighborhood unity, said Sgt. Scott Roach of the Powell Police Department.

"It's a night where we can all get together and take back the community, and show that we won't stand for crime in our community," Roach said.

Groups set to attend include the local police force, the Liberty Township Fire Department, Delaware County Children Services and the U.S. Marshals.

Officials will speak and share information that could help keep homes and neighborhoods safe, Roach said.

Residents can learn how to get involved in the community through volunteering opportunities with Delaware County Children Services and other agencies.

They also can learn about the Powell Citizen Police Academy and sign up for a future session.

Children's activities will include an obstacle course set up by the YMCA, as well as face painting and arts and crafts activities.

Student musicians from Liberty High School and Village Academy will stage a musical performance.

Families also can enjoy the park's other amenities, including the playground and picnic areas.

"We hope everyone will come out, bring their neighbors, and have a good time," Roach said.

Free pizza from Jet's and Flyers will be available for all attendees.

National Night Out was founded by the National Association of Town Watch in 1984.

Powell has participated since 2008.
