Service clubs, donations help feed hungry families
Powell's service clubs need help this month feeding the county's residents.
The Powell Sertoma Club, Olentangy Rotary Club, Powell Kiwanis Club and Southern Delaware County Real Estate Association currently are collecting donations to provide holiday dinners to dozens of struggling area families.
Each year the groups deliver meals to about 100 families.
The pre-cooked turkey dinners are prepared by Kroger and feed six. They include side dishes of mashed potatoes, dressing, cranberry sauce and rolls.
To date, more than $30,000 has been raised and more than 750 complete holiday dinners have been delivered -- enough to serve about 4,200 residents.
Powell Sertoma Club member Larry Coolidge said the charity drive is a simple way to give back to the community during the holiday season.
"It's always great to get letters back from people who say, 'Gee, we were going to have pizza,' " Coolidge said.
"We feel really good about doing it."
The dinners are provided to area churches, the Andrews House and various schools, which deliver the meals to the families to preserve their privacy.
Residents can donate any amount or provide one complete family dinner for $44, two for $88 and so on.
Donations can be sent to the Powell Sertoma Club, 78 W. Olentangy St., Powell 43065.
