A 74-year-old man was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 11, after falling into an icy pond at a Powell park.

A 74-year-old Powell man has died after falling through the ice at a pond in Meadowview Park.

Siegbert A. Allespach was pulled from the pond by Liberty Township medics at about 4 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, and taken to Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, according to a news release from the city of Powell. Allespach was pronounced dead at the hospital at about 5 p.m.

City of Powell spokeswoman Megan Canavan said Allespach might have been trying to rescue a dog he was walking when he fell into the pond.

First responders said Allespach had been submerged in the icy water for 20 or more minutes before he was rescued.

The dog is safe and recovering.

Meadowview Park is located within the Powell's Ashmore subdivision, just east of Wooten Court.
