Quarterback Taylor Hudson of the Olentangy Liberty High School football team ignored coach Steve Hale's instructions late in the game against host Westerville South on Friday, but the result was a 48-yard touchdown pass that sealed a 39-27 victory.

With the Patriots facing a third-and-9 on the South 48-yard line with 1 minute, 47 seconds remaining after recovering an onside kick by the Wildcats, Hale called a bootleg and told Hudson, "Don't do anything stupid. Run the ball."

Instead Hudson connected on a crossing pattern with Phil Osolnski, who shed a defender to reach the end zone and seal the win as the Patriots finished 6-4 overall and 4-3 in the OCC-Cardinal Division.

"Coach said, 'We're looking for you to run the ball,'" Hudson said. "'If there's somebody wide open, throw it. But if not, tuck it and run.' I saw the window, threw it up and Phil Osolinski made a heck of a catch and a heck of a run."

Hudson was nine of 19 passing for 237 yards and three touchdowns, and running back Jeff Kemper supplied 170 yards rushing and two scores on 25 carries for Liberty.

"You do what you can do," said Hale, whose team had reached the playoffs the past six seasons. "The only thing we could do for our program tonight was come out and get a big win and go into the offseason with a win."

South, which has clinched a Division I playoff berth in Region 3, finished the regular season at 8-2 and 6-1, winning the league title.

"(Liberty) played it like it was their playoff game," South coach Rocky Pentello said. "Our kids played and we just have to hope everything doesn't fall the wrong way next time."

South's Jayshon Jackson gained 271 yards on 32 carries and had scoring runs of 38, 28, 3 and 3 yards. He finished the regular season with 2,124 yards after rushing for 2,037 yards a year ago.
