Betz named AD at Orange
John Betz has been named the athletics director at Olentangy Orange High School, but the move has forced him to leave his post as boys basketball coach with the Pioneers.
Betz replaces Tony Milano, who resigned last month after four years.
Milano was the first athletics director for Orange.
“I think this is a heck of an opportunity,” Betz said. "If I didn't get on this train now, I don't know if it would circle back around again."
Betz graduated from Bexley in 1985. He was boys basketball coach at West Jefferson and Big Walnut before becoming Orange’s first coach in the 2008-09 school year.
“I dearly love basketball, but I played football, basketball and baseball in high school and I love tennis and being around all sports,” said Betz, who taught math at Orange for the past four years. “This was just the next step in the progression.”
Betz coached Orange to a 64-23 overall record his four seasons and was 40-14 in the OCC-Capital Division with two league championships.
“This is a great place. I love Orange and found some pretty good roots here with the community and the kids,” Betz said. “I will miss the interaction in the classroom, but I really enjoy this. I’m at a soccer game (on Aug. 21) and it’s the first chance I’ve had to catch my breath in the last 14 days. It’s only going to get better.”
Betz said he hoped to have the boys basketball position filled in the coming weeks.
