Braves, Patriots advance to semis

The Olentangy High School girls volleyball team won its first two matches in the Division I district tournament.

The seventh-seeded Braves defeated Teays Valley 25-10, 25-14, 23-25, 25-17 in the first round Oct. 15 and beat Westerville North 11-25, 25-22, 25-20, 28-26 in the second round Oct. 17.

"We have had slow starts in both sectional matches but have finished strong each match," coach Michelle Mimna said. "Our offense has had good balance lately, which we've been working toward all year."

Olentangy was 19-5 before playing fifth-seeded Hilliard Bradley in a district semifinal Oct. 24. The winner plays top-seeded Dublin Coffman or 12th-seeded Mount Vernon in a district final on Saturday, Oct. 27, at Big Walnut.

The district champion advances to a regional semifinal Nov. 1 at Hilliard Davidson against Massillon Jackson, North Canton Hoover, Uniontown Lake or Wooster.

Seeded fourth, Liberty had a first-round bye and defeated Canal Winchester 25-14, 25-20, 25-11 in the second round Oct. 17 to improve to 15-4.

The Patriots played eighth-seeded Newark in a district semifinal Oct. 23. The winner plays second-seeded Pickerington North or 10th-seeded Worthington Kilbourne in a district final Saturday, Oct. 27, at Big Walnut.

The district champion plays Chillicothe, Gahanna, Grove City or Westerville Central in a regional semifinal Nov. 1 at Davidson.

Orange lost to Mount Vernon 25-15, 26-24, 25-6 in the first round Oct. 15 to finish 7-12.

Liberty placed second in the OCC-Central Division at 12-2 behind Dublin Coffman (14-0) and Olentangy and Orange placed second (12-2) and sixth (5-9), respectively, in the OCC-Capital behind champion Big Walnut (13-1).
