Liberty splits pair of OCC-Central matches

By ThisWeek Community News  •

The Olentangy Liberty High School wrestling team split a pair of OCC-Central Division matches last week.

The Patriots beat Upper Arlington 39-32 and lost to Thomas Worthington 44-27 on Jan. 17 and are 3-2 in the OCC-Central. Their final two league matches will be Jan. 31 at Dublin Coffman and Feb. 7 at home against Marysville.

On Jan. 19, Liberty defeated Olentangy Orange 36-29 and beat Westerville North on criteria. The Patriots tied the Warriors with 33 points but got the victory for having more pins in the match.

Going 4-0 last week were Jake Ryan at 152 pounds, Giuseppe Penzone at 126 and John Furnas at 106.

"The majority of our wrestlers showed up focused and completed the task," coach Mark Marinelli said of the wins over Orange and North. "We have a friendly rivalry with Orange, so it was nice to beat them. We had a nice match with Westerville North and got lucky with the way things broke for us."

Pioneers sweep OCC-Capital matches

Orange defeated Franklin Heights 70-11 and Watkins Memorial 36-35 on Jan. 17 to improve to 3-2 in the OCC-Capital.

The Pioneers' final two league matches are Jan. 31 at home against Big Walnut and Feb. 7 at Olentangy.

Orange faced Coffman in the first round of the inaugural Division I state team tournament Jan. 23.

The Pioneers were seeded third in Region 5-A of the dual-format tournament and Coffman was seeded sixth. The winner faces second-seeded Delaware or seventh-seeded Westerville Central in the second round Wednesday, Jan. 30, at a site to be announced. The regional semifinals will be held that same day at the same site.

The regional final will be Feb. 6.

Braves split pair of matches in OCC-Capital

Olentangy is 3-2 in the OCC-Capital after splitting a pair of matches Jan. 17, defeating New Albany 60-18 and losing to Delaware 37-26.

The Braves' final two league matches are Jan. 31 at Mount Vernon and Feb. 7 at home against Orange.

Seeded fifth in Region 5-A, Olentangy competed against fourth-seeded Ashland in the first round of the Division I state team tournament Jan. 23.

The winner faces top-seeded Marysville or eighth-seeded Dublin Scioto in the second round Wednesday, Jan. 30, at a site to be announced. If Olentangy and Orange advance, they would meet in a regional semifinal that same day at the same site.
