Patriots striving for winning league record

The Olentangy Liberty High School wrestling team will try to earn a winning record in the OCC-Central Division when it plays host to Marysville on Thursday, Feb. 7, in its final league dual match.

The Patriots lost to Dublin Coffman 34-23 in a league dual Jan. 31. Giuseppe Penzone (126 pounds), Nick Thrasher (132), Andrew Eschleman (152), Jake Ryan (160) and Mitch Deruy (heavyweight) won matches.

The Patriots are 3-3 in the OCC-Central. Marysville is 6-0 and will look to clinch the outright league title.

Pioneers fall in Region 5-A semi

Third-seeded Orange upset second-seeded Delaware 30-29 in a Region 5-A match of the Division I state team tournament Jan. 30. Michael McQueeney (106), Hayden Fath (138), Evan Saloom (152), Ben Heilman (170), Lenn's Kamba (195), Nick Lee (220) and Alex Herz (heavyweight) won matches.

The Pioneers then lost to top-seeded Marysville 44-24 in a regional semifinal later in the evening. Anthony Spriggs (132), Heilman (170), Blake Skuratowicz (182) and Herz (heavyweight) won matches.

On Jan. 31, Orange beat Big Walnut 54-20 to improve to 4-2 in the OCC-Capital.

The Pioneers wrap up league action Thursday, Feb. 7, at Olentangy.

Braves eliminated from team tourney

Olentangy lost to Mount Vernon 40-27 on Jan. 31 to drop to 3-3 in the OCC-Capital.

In the state team tournament, the fifth-seeded Braves lost to Marysville 61-18 in a Region 5-A dual Jan. 30. Earning wins were Austin Fajardo (132), Chase Boyd (160), Nate Hall (182) and Brandon Sheppard (heavyweight).

Against Mount Vernon, Kyle Slade (126), Cody Pollitt (145), Jake Didion (152), Connor Slade (170), Ben Harder (182) and Blake Young (heavyweight) won matches.
