Liberty girls capture sectional championship

Jeremy Karr is among a large contingent of Liberty boys and girls who will be competing in the Division I district swimming and diving meet on Saturday, Feb. 16, at Ohio State.

The Olentangy Liberty High School girls swimming team scored 248 points to win the Division I sectional meet held Feb. 9 at the Union County YMCA ahead of runner-up Dublin Jerome (218).

The winner of each event qualified for the district meet Saturday, Feb. 16, at Ohio State. In addition, 27 at-large district berths were awarded in each event based on times from the Central, East and Southeast sectional sites. Divers begin the postseason at district.

Bailee Braun won the 500-yard freestyle in 5 minutes, 21.01 seconds and Olivia Bently won the 100 breaststroke in 1:08.13.

Placing second for Liberty were Cameron Hiltner in the 200 free (1:56.42), Justine Kenny, Bently, Caroline Racke and Reilly Haas in the 200 medley relay (1:56.48), Braun in the 200 individual medley (2:15.22), Haas in the 50 free (25.5) and Kenny in the 100 backstroke (1:01.46).

Fourteen members of the Patriots girls squad qualified for district in individual events and all three relays made the cut as well.

The top two placers in each swimming event at district automatically advance to the state meet Feb. 21-23 at Branin Natatorium in Canton. In addition, 16 at-large state berths will be awarded for each swimming event based on times statewide. The top three boys divers and top four girls divers at district advance to state.

The Liberty boys team placed fourth (160) in the Union County YMCA sectional behind champion Dublin Coffman (230).

Tom Dawson won the 100 breast (1:02.95), and Jack Saczawa, Dawson, Matthew Lennon and Nicholas Tracewell finished second in the 200 medley relay (1:44.21).

Braves' girls 3rd, boys 6th in sectional

The Olentangy girls team finished third (212) in the Union County YMCA sectional.

Ellie Nebraska, Erika Poling, Mara Nebraska and Abbey Newman won the 400 free relay (3:43.05). Placing second were Mara Nebraska in the 100 breast (1:10.13), Newman, Carly Wolfe, Maura Parker and Ally Fomich in the 200 free relay (1:44.21) and Ellie Nebraska in the 100 free (55.11).

The boys squad finished sixth (141).

Tyler Norris finished third in the 200 free (1:49.8), and Norris (4:58.39), Keanan Fomich (5:00.05) and Will Paull (5:00.27) finished fourth through sixth in the 500 free.

Pioneers' boys 7th, girls 8th in sectional

The Orange girls team finished eighth (75) in the Union County YMCA sectional. Kara Miller was sixth in the 500 free (5:27.91) and seventh in the 200 free (2:04.32). Haley Johnson was seventh in the 100 breast (1:14.92) and Joy Wharton was eighth in the 100 breast (1:15.05).

The boys squad finished seventh (72). Ric Reynolds was sixth in the 50 free (23.13) and eighth in the 100 back (1:01.56). Alex Chugh finished ninth in the 100 breast (1:12.38).
