Senior forward Joe Morycz put back a missed shot as time expired to lead host Olentangy past 22nd-seeded Upper Arlington 43-41 on Feb. 23 in the first round of the Division I district tournament.
Senior guard Seth Clark and senior forward Craig Matthews both had 13 points for the 21st-seeded Braves, who improved to 15-8. Sophomore guard Jimmy Gundling had seven points and Morycz added six.
Olentangy plays at ninth-seeded Gahanna in a second-round game at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28. The Lions are 18-5 and have not played the Braves this season.
The winner advances to play eighth-seeded Reynoldsburg or 26th-seeded Worthington Kilbourne in a district semifinal at 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 6, at Westerville Central. The Raiders were 18-5 before Feb. 27 and Kilbourne was 9-13. Neither team played Olentangy this season.
The winner plays second-seeded Westerville North, 13th-seeded Newark, 17th-seeded St. Charles or 40th-seeded Columbus West in a district final at 3 p.m. March 9 at the Fairgrounds Coliseum.
Pioneers prep for trip to Zanesville
Orange improved to 13-9 by defeating visiting and 30th-seeded Franklin Heights 50-32 on Feb. 23 in the opening round of the Division I district tournament.
Senior guard Nick Deitsch led the 18th-seeded Pioneers with 22 points and five 3-pointers. Senior post player Brady Harris had 11 points and senior forward Tyler Dillard added six.
Orange advanced to a second-round game at sixth-seeded Zanesville at 8:30 p.m. Friday, March 1. The Blue Devils are 19-4 and the teams have not played this season.
The winner advances to a district semifinal at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 6, at Pickerington North against fourth-seeded New Albany or 28th-seeded Mount Vernon.
Mount Vernon is 8-14 and had a first-round bye. Orange defeated the Yellow Jackets 41-35 on Dec. 18 and 51-48 in overtime Jan. 29 in OCC-Capital Division play.
New Albany is 21-2. The Eagles swept Orange in league play, winning 68-54 on Dec. 7 and 54-34 on Jan. 18.
The winner advances to a district final at noon March 9 at the Fairgrounds to play fifth-seeded Dublin Scioto, seventh-seeded Dublin Coffman, 10th-seeded Pickerington Central or 16th-seeded Grove City.
Patriots primed for tournament play
Liberty was 21-1 before playing 23rd-seeded Dresden Tri-Valley on Feb. 27 in a second-round Division I district tournament game.
The third-seeded Patriots entered on a 17-game winning streak. Liberty's last loss was a 70-62 setback Dec. 21 at Westland, which could be its next opponent.
If the Patriots defeated Tri-Valley, they will play 11th-seeded Westland or 24th-seeded Westerville Central at 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 6, in a district semifinal at Marysville. The Warhawks were 12-11 before Feb. 27 and have not played Liberty this season.
In an OCC-Central rematch, Liberty beat Westland 58-44 on Feb. 1.
The semifinal winner advances to a district final against top-seeded Northland, 12th-seeded Westerville South, 20th-seeded Walnut Ridge or 41st-seeded Central Crossing at 6 p.m. March 9 at the Fairgrounds.
