Liberty sitting third in OCC-Central tournament

Sophomore Cameron McCloskey and freshman Tommy Mitchell both shot 74s to lead the Olentangy Liberty High School boys golf team in the third round of OCC-Central Division play Aug. 28 at Darby Creek.

The Patriots were second (302) behind Dublin Coffman (300) and ahead of Upper Arlington (307), Marysville (314), Thomas Worthington (315), Hilliard Davidson (323), Central Crossing (333) and Westland (426).

Junior Doug Simpson (76) was next for Liberty, followed by senior Brett Beard and

junior Tommy Marks, both with 78s.

The fourth and final round of OCC-Central competition is Wednesday, Sept. 11, at Turnberry.

Through three rounds, McCloskey and Marysville’s Morgan Tarrant are tied for the league’s third-best overall average at 74.67. Coffman’s Nick Sparling leads at 67.33, with Thomas’ Curtis Salmans second at 74.33.

Mitchell is averaging 75.67 in league play, followed by Simpson (78), Marks (81) and Beard (82).

Liberty is third (16-5) through three rounds of league competition, behind Coffman (21-0) and UA (17-4) and ahead of Marysville (11-10), Davidson (8-13), Thomas (8-13), Central Crossing (3-18) and Westland (0-21).

Ahonen leading Braves in league

Senior Dylan Ahonen shot a 73 to lead Olentangy in the third round of OCC-Capital play Aug. 28 at Turnberry.

The Braves shot 310 to finish second behind New Albany (306) and ahead of Big Walnut (318), Orange (322), Mount Vernon (323), Worthington Kilbourne (343) and Delaware (353). Franklin Heights did not have enough golfers for a team score.

Senior Carter Rubcich and junior Jeff Darfus both carded 76s, with senior Donal Baker shooting 85 and senior Evan Wilson adding an 87.

The fourth round of the OCC-Capital tournament is Wednesday, Sept. 11, at Granville Golf Course.

Through three rounds, Olentangy is second (19-2) behind New Albany (20-1) and ahead of Mount Vernon (13-8), Orange (12-9), Big Walnut (10-11), Kilbourne (6-15), Delaware (4-17) and Franklin Heights (0-21).

Ahonen is third in the league with an average of 74, behind the New Albany duo of Jackson Moss (71.33) and Avery Schneider (73). Rubcich has averaged 76.67, followed by Darfus (77.67), Wilson (80.67) and Baker (83.67).

Reynolds pacing Pioneers in league

Junior Ric Reynolds shot a 77 to lead Orange in the third round of OCC-Capital play as the Pioneers were fourth (322).

Junior Luke Buchy shot an 80 and was followed by freshman Spencer Gifford (82), senior Ray Albertini (83) and junior Ben Kunz (91).

Reynolds is tied with Big Walnut’s Kyle Gose for eighth overall as an individual in the OCC-Capital with an average of 77.33 through the three rounds. Buchy has averaged 79, followed by Albertini (86.33) and Kunz (87.33). Junior Hunter Baxter has averaged 87.33 in two rounds.
