Olentangy Orange High School senior Anna Sanford and freshman Alle Sanford captured the doubles championship in the Division I district girls tennis tournament Oct. 12 at Hilliard Davidson, earning a trip to the state tournament.
The sisters will compete at state Friday, Oct. 18, at Ohio State and Saturday, Oct. 19, at Davidson.
The top four in singles and doubles at district qualified for state, and the Sanfords did that Oct. 11 before returning for placement matches the next day.
In the championship match they defeated Pickerington Central sisters Isis Thomas and Kyah Thomas 6-0, 6-2. They had beaten Upper Arlington's Audrey Berger and Kyra Jung 6-1, 6-2 in a semifinal.
The Sanfords defeated Liberty's Avivah Wang and Sidney Reineke 6-0, 6-0 in the first round and Dublin Coffman's Ashley Tan and Amber Lee 6-1, 6-1 in the second.
Also competing at district for Orange were senior Madison Wolfe and junior Jessica Phelps, who earned a 6-7, 6-1, 6-2 win over Gahanna's Rachel Zink and Emily Merickel in the first round and lost to New Albany's Jane Haffer and Alex Cash 6-4, 7-6 in the second with a state berth on the line.
Liberty concludes season at district
Liberty sophomore Alexia Meyer reached a state-qualifying singles match at district before losing to Watterson's Lauren Ghidotti 6-2, 6-3.
Meyer defeated Davidson's Emily Turner 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 in the first round.
In doubles, the Patriots' team of Reineke, a freshman, and Wang, a sophomore, lost its opener to Orange's Sanford sisters.
Sophomore Lizzie Radkiewicz and junior Sonia Chhabria lost 6-1, 6-1 in the first round to Upper Arlington's Beniva Ganther and Anna Reynolds.
Season ends for Olentangy's Brdicka
Olentangy sophomore Bri Brdicka also competed at district and lost her first match 6-0, 6-2 to Upper Arlington's Olivia Kompa.
She was the only Braves player to advance to the district.
