The Olentangy Orange High School girls soccer team won the first league championship in the program's six-year history, defeating visiting Worthington Kilbourne 2-0 in an OCC-Capital Division game Oct. 8.
Junior midfielder Emily Beaver and senior forward Sophie Level scored, and junior goalkeeper Mackenzie Brunke made six saves to secure a 6-0 league finish for the Pioneers. Orange finished ahead of Kilbourne (4-2), New Albany (4-2), Olentangy (3-2-1), Big Walnut (1-4-1), Delaware (1-4-1) and Mount Vernon (0-5-1).
The Pioneers were 10-5 overall before playing host to 37th-seeded Briggs in the first round of the Division I district tournament Oct. 15. Orange earned the 11th seed and, with a win, would play host to 12th-seeded Marysville in a second-round game Thursday, Oct. 17, with that winner playing eighth-seeded Grove City or 22nd-seeded Westerville North in a district semifinal Tuesday, Oct. 22.
"We've realized from the beginning of the season the type of talent that we had out here, and it's a matter of getting the girls to play consistently to the level they have the potential to be at," said assistant coach Jessica Witzky, who is overseeing the team while coach Jen Odebrecht is on maternity leave. "Fortunately, it's starting to come together now."
