The fourth-seeded Olentangy Liberty High School field hockey team gave top-seeded Thomas Worthington a scare in a district final Oct. 26 at Dublin Jerome before losing 4-2.
Attacker Gaby Perez scored two goals, including one to tie the game at 1 going into halftime. She then scored with 25 minutes remaining to give the Patriots a 2-1 lead.
Attacker Mara Hunter and midfielder Dani Bursinger each had an assist and goalkeeper Maddie Passerella had 20 saves for Liberty, which finished 13-3-2.
"I couldn't be more proud of our team," coach Marianne Flannery said. "That's the most goals (Thomas) has had scored on them all season. We just said we wanted to keep getting better. We were just trying to get the girls relaxed."
The Patriots defeated seventh-seeded Jerome 1-0 in a semifinal Oct. 22 at home, as Bursinger scored and Passerella had 10 saves.
"(That) was a good defensive effort," Flannery said. "I give Jerome a lot of credit. They came ready to play and competed with a lot of heart and with nothing to lose.
"(It) was not our strongest game, but we got it done. Maddie Passerella (was) strong in goal and had a few key saves. The entire defense did well and our offense did a good job of adjusting to (the) defense since Jerome pressed up field. They forced our offense on our heels and we couldn't convert on our opportunities. At the end of the day we converted on one that we needed to survive another day."
