The Olentangy Liberty High School wrestling team went 3-2 in the Mentor Duals on Jan. 4, beating Mentor 34-30, Amherst Steele 36-34 and Twinsburg 42-20 and losing to Mason 36-19 and Chagrin Falls Kenston 51-18.
"We didn't have a full lineup because we sent some of our kids to wrestle in the Pioneer Invitational (on Jan. 4 at Orange), but we still wrestled well as a team to win three duals," coach Mark Marinelli.
The Patriots also finished 25th (60.5 points) in the Brecksville Holiday Tournament behind champion and host Brecksville-Broadview Heights (216) as 46 teams scored in the event held Dec. 29 and 30. Jonathan Furnas (120 pounds) and Giuseppe Penzone (126) each placed third.
"They both wrestled really well," Marinelli said. "It's just as hard to place at Brecksville as it is to place in the state tournament, so those two guys did well against good competition."
