Liberty trio to play in college

Olentangy Liberty High School students Mitchell Griffiths, Nick Newton and Jacob Niggemeyer have signed to play baseball in college.

Niggemeyer, a pitcher, third baseman and outfielder, will play at Ohio State. He was first-team all-district in Division I and OCC-Central Division Player of the Year last spring, when he batted .500 with four homers, 41 RBI, 11 doubles and 24 runs. He also was 6-2 with 62 strikeouts, 15 walks and a 1.90 ERA in 51 innings.

Griffiths, a pitcher, will play at Alderson Broaddus University in Philippi, W.Va. He was honorable mention all-league last season, going 3-2 with two saves, 33 strikeouts, 14 walks and a 3.95 ERA in 39 innings.

Newton, a pitcher, will play at Marshall University in Huntington, W.Va. He has not played with Liberty since his freshman season, but has played summer travel baseball.

The Patriots finished 19-10 overall last season, losing to Watkins Memorial 2-1 in a district semifinal. They tied Marysville for second (9-5) in the OCC-Central behind Thomas Worthington (11-3).
