Patriots getting ready for Marysville

The Olentangy Liberty High School boys basketball team faces a familiar opponent in its Division I district tournament opener.

The 13th-seeded Patriots, who had a first-round bye, play host to 17th-seeded Marysville on Friday, Feb. 28, in the second round.

It will be the first game for Liberty, which is 14-8, in 14 days. On Feb. 14, the Patriots closed the regular season by defeating Thomas Worthington 55-52 in overtime.

Liberty split with the Monarchs in OCC-Central Division play. Mike DeLeon scored 35 points and Law Jones added 11 to lead a 77-51 win Dec. 21.

On Jan. 29, Liberty lost to Marysville 69-64 in overtime. Zach Nice had 17 points, Jones scored 13 and Brad Smith added 11.

The Patriots have won five consecutive games since that loss.

The second-round winner advances to play sixth-seeded Pickerington Central or 34th-seeded Canal Winchester in a district semifinal Wednesday, March 5, at Westerville Central.

Liberty has not played either team this season. The Tigers were 17-5 before playing Feb. 26 against the Indians, who were 8-15.

The winner advances to a district final March 8 at the Fairgrounds Coliseum.

Pioneers ready for district opener

Orange, which has not played since Feb. 15 when it lost to Dublin Coffman 80-50, opens the Division I district tournament Friday, Feb. 28, with a second-round game at seventh-seeded Walnut Ridge.

The Scots improved to 18-4 by defeating 41st-seeded Lancaster 62-34 on Feb. 22.

The winner plays ninth-seeded Coffman or 33rd-seeded Hilliard Bradley in a district semifinal Wednesday, March 5, at Liberty. Coffman was 16-5 before Feb. 26 when it played Bradley, which was 9-13.

Bradley defeated Orange 66-52 on Feb. 8. Jay Joseph led the Pioneers with 18 points and Chase Mosher and Colin Shepherd scored 10 apiece.

Against Coffman, Dave Dawson scored 13 points and Grant Gossard and Shepherd both added nine.

The semifinal winner advances to a district final March 8 at the Fairgrounds.
