Braves, Patriots battling for 2nd in league

Being in the same league as three-time defending state champion Dublin Jerome has created an unusual perspective for the Olentangy and Liberty high school girls golf teams.

Both programs are approaching this season with the idea that finishing second in the OCC-Cardinal Division would be a worthwhile accomplishment.

During the opening round of the four-round league tournament Aug. 6 at The Links at Groveport, Liberty shot 365 to edge Olentangy (371) for second behind Jerome (306).

While the Celtics have won nine league titles in 10 seasons -- in addition to winning four state titles overall -- the Braves and Patriots are planning to battle for the next spot.

A year ago, Jerome went 24-0 in the league while Liberty finished second at 20-4 and Olentangy tied Dublin Scioto for third at 14-10.

This season, Scioto doesn't have enough players to post a team score.

"I told the girls to not even worry about Jerome because they're in a different stratosphere," Braves coach John Feasel said. "I also told them I'd buy patches for their jackets if we get second in our league. Second place would be very good, as would getting to district. That's our two goals."

"I think we're all aware that none of us are going to catch Jerome," Patriots coach Kaiya Wheat said. "It takes a while to build that kind of depth. It would be our goal to get second."

Liberty returns two of its top five players and Olentangy returns three of its top five.

Sophomore duo to lead Braves

The only time that Olentangy advanced to the Division I district tournament as a team was in 2007.

The Braves took fourth (373) in the Oakhaven sectional last season behind champion Jerome (299) as the top three moved on to district.

Sophomore Kara Raines, who shot an 87 at sectional to advance individually and then carded an 88 at district, is the top returnee. Sophomore Alex Cardi was the team's third-best scorer at sectional last year with a 98, and senior Anne Kim also is back.

Also on the team are seniors Amanda Chirico and Abbey Graham and freshman Maddie Gwinn.

The Braves finished second (366) in the 10-team Olentangy Classic on Aug. 8 at Oakhaven behind Liberty (351). Raines shot 82 to tie for third.

The second round of the league tournament was Aug. 12 at Westchester.

Gone from last year's team are 2014 graduate Taylor Dencer, who was an individual district qualifier, and classmate Stephanie Berry.

"We're going to be good," Feasel said. "Kim has improved a lot. We've got three girls back and we've got to get a good fourth score. It's slowly building. We've got a good bunch of girls and they're really working hard."

Liberty boosted by freshmen

After making back-to-back district tournament appearances, Liberty settled for fourth (356) in the Westchester sectional last fall behind district-qualifiers Pickerington North (338), Upper Arlington (352) and Hilliard Bradley (355).

Senior Olivia Dunning and junior Reilly Haas, who carded 90 and 100, respectively, at sectional, are the top returnees.

Freshmen Sidney Kadlic and Priyasha Kota had the team's top two scores during tryouts.

Also on the team are junior Halie Bryer and sophomore Camryn Calus.

Rachel Marks, a 2014 graduate, shot a 75 at sectional to advance individually and then carded an 81 at district to miss moving on to state by three strokes.

Amy Atkinson also was lost to graduation after shooting 91 at sectional.

"It's going really well," Wheat said. "I'm very optimistic. I think the freshmen are going to do a great job. They've started out really strong, which is a surprise, and the veterans are doing very well. Olivia Dunning has improved a lot."

Liberty continued OCC-Cardinal play Aug. 12 at Westchester.

Orange pleased with improvement

With three of its top five players back, Orange is looking to take a step forward after going winless in the OCC-Cardinal a year ago.

During the first round of the seven-team league tournament Aug. 6, the Pioneers shot 430 to place sixth as Delaware was last (490).

Orange has 11 players in its program, which is another positive, according to coach Cari DeAngelis.

"It's been looking pretty good," DeAngelis said. "I see a lot of potential in the girls."

Back from last season are seniors Maddie Lindeman and Kennedy Willis and sophomore Brittany Miller.

Miller had the team's best score (107) in the Oakhaven sectional as Orange placed last (442) of 10 teams. Her father, Kris Miller, is Orange's boys coach and the PGA director of instruction at Medallion.

Also looking to contribute are sophomore Madison Webb and freshmen Emily Fisher, Rachael Nobile and Lizzie Porath.

"We only had one returnee from the varsity level last year, and that's what got us last year," DeAngelis said. "A lot of them have been getting lessons and now they're just going to get better."
