Events celebrating Violet Township's bicentennial year will continue through the spring and summer, starting May 18 with "Pedal in the Park."

The event will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. at Sycamore Creek Park and is designed for some of the township's youngest residents, said Violet Township Bicentennial Celebration Commission member Peggy Portier.

Preschool-age children and kindergartners are invited to bring their bicycles with training wheels, tricycles, scooters and wagons to ride a three-quarter mile course set up along the park's bicycle path. Starting at the park's shelter house, there will be six stations set up along the course. Children who visit each station will receive a ribbon of participation.

"I was concerned there wasn't (a bicentennial) event for younger kids," Portier said. "I thought this was an event especially designed for preschool or kindergarten kids whose attention span doesn't really care about what happened 200 years ago."

More proficient bicycle riders, Portier said, will be invited to a "Bike Rodeo" from noon to 4 p.m.Aug. 18 in the parking lot of Lifestyles Family Fitness on state Route 256.

Both events, she said, are free.

"We really are making a concerted effort to include everyone in the community in something they would be interested in," Portier said of the commission's efforts. "We tried to have a variety of events throughout the year so that something will interest everyone in the community."

Perhaps the commission's largest event of the year will be Heritage Days on July 5 and 6. The two-day festival at Victory Park will include two stages for live entertainment, a period encampment, Civil War reenactors, antique tractors, a working sawmill and craftsmen.

Other bicentennial events scheduled for throughout the summer include:

Bicentennial 5K Run/1 Mile Kid Run/Historic Family Fun Walk at 9 a.m. June7 in downtown Pickerington.

Bicentennial quilt show from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 21 and from noon to 5 p.m. June 22 at Lakeview Junior High School.

Garden and landscape contest with judging scheduled for July 16-23.

Rocking chair marathon June 23-26 as part of the annual Violet Festival.
