Steps were taken recently to improve security at Pickerington City Hall with the purchase and installation of a video monitoring system.

Surveillance cameras were installed in the building's lobby late last month.

"It's to monitor people when they come in case we get an irate person," Police Chief Mike Taylor said. "We just want to be able to identify them and be able to have it on video.

"I saw it as a safety issue for people who work here and customers who come into City Hall."

Taylor said there have been incidents at City Hall when disgruntled people have become disorderly, but no issues have occurred since the installation of the cameras.

City Hall and the Pickerington Police Department now are the only two city buildings with video surveillance. The cost of the City Hall system was $1,777.
