Barnes and Noble event to help Toll Gate library fund

Wednesday May 1, 2013 3:07 PM

Toll Gate Elementary School in Pickerington is hosting a fundraiser/author signing with the support of the local Barnes and Noble bookstore to benefit the PTO classroom library fund.

Shoppers at Barnes and Noble, 1738 Hill Road N., can support the students and teachers by giving a portion of the proceeds from all purchases made from 5 to 8 p.m. May 3 to the school's parent teacher organization by using a special voucher distributed by the school.

Sherry Bentley, a fourth-grade teacher at Toll Gate, will be signing copies of the recently released Chicken Soup for the Soul: Angels Among Us that features a story written by her titled What I Know For Sure.

Proceeds from the sale of that book as well as all other items in the store, including those purchased in the cafe, will be contributed to the school.

Students in grades K-4 will be participating in an open microphone presentation.

Original poetry and stories as well as those written by published authors and poets will be shared for the enjoyment of Barnes and Noble customers.

Children will also have the opportunity to enjoy making a craft or having their face painted with the help of high school National Honor Society members and Toll Gate Elementary's student ambassadors.

The school's principal, Kristi Motsch, and Pickerington Local School District Superintendent Rob Walker plan to stop by and greet the guests to Barnes and Noble as well.

As the district expands the transition to common core standards to include all elementary grade levels next year, it is necessary to expand the classroom libraries as well to provide the students with some specific types of literature that teachers don't presently have and in quantities that can be used by multiple classrooms.

A fundraiser like this one helps to ease the burden on the building budget while providing much needed literary resources for the classrooms, school officials said.

Event organizers said those who are looking for gifts for upcoming religious celebrations, Mothers Day, or graduations, can come visit Barnes and Noble May 2 and ask for the Toll Gate Elementary fundraiser voucher to help support literacy for Pickerington students.

The vouchers will be good from May 2-7 both in store and online.
