The sounds of Broadway will fill Pickerington's Epiphany Lutheran Church on Saturday, May 4, as the Pickerington Community Chorus presents its annual Spring Concert.
Billed as "The Best of Broadway," chorus secretary Julie Rice said the concert "will feature the chorus singing selections from such popular Broadway musicals as West Side Story, Sound of Music, Annie Get Your Gun, The Music Man, Chorus Line and Les Miserables, to name a few."
Rice said there will also be some duets and possibly a solo or two by members of the chorus.
"They are songs people are familiar with and if people want to sing along with us they're more than welcome," said Rice.
"The Best of Broadway" concert starts at 7 p.m. There is a suggested donation of $5 at the door. Epiphany Lutheran Church is located at 268 Hill Road North.
Rice said the chorus is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization made up of primarily Pickerington-area residents of varying ages and backgrounds.
"We have pretty much anyone from a high school student up to our oldest member, she's in her eighties," said Rice.
What ties them all together is a sincere love of music, she said.
"Most have sung in other choirs (but) we don't have anyone with a professional music background," Rice said.
"We're an all-volunteer group," she said.
"We don't even have auditions, (people) just have to show up and love to sing."
Rice said since the chorus finally received its designation as a non-profit at the end of last year, the organizational focus has centered on sustainability.
"We're in the process of applying for a grant from the Fairfield Foundation and we're trying to get our capital built up a bit," she said.
Rice said part of the chorus' five-year plan is to make the chorus more visible in the community.
"We want to continue to grow and make a name for ourselves," said Rice, who added such a goal requires adequate funding.
The chorus will hold two fundraisers in May.
Patrons of Uno Chicago Grille, 1720 Hill Rd. N., can have a portion of their bill donated to the chorus the entire weekend of May 3-5.
Tuesday, May 7, the chorus will sing inside the Barnes & Noble bookstore, 1738 Hill Rd. N., from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., during which a portion of sales there will also be donated to chorus.
Both fundraisers will require vouchers to be presented in order for the respective donations to kick in.
Rice said patrons can receive a voucher from chorus members at the bookstore fundraiser or print off a voucher by going to the chorus' Facebook page at: facebook.com/Pickeringtoncommunitychorus?ref=ts&fre=ts.
