Pickerington Local School District kindergarten and elementary school students will begin classes five minutes later this year.
The start of school is rapidly approaching for Pickerington students.
The first day of 2013-14 classes for the district is Aug. 19.
When school opens this year, K-4 students and their parents will be greeted with new start times, which are five minutes later than last year.
The Pickerington School Board unanimously approved pushing back start times July 8.
School for morning, or "A.M.," kindergarten students will begin at 9:15 a.m. and end at noon. Afternoon/ "P.M." kindergarten will be held from 1 to 3:40 p.m.
Elementary school students will attend school from 9:15 a.m. to 3:40 p.m.
"In essence, school starts minutes later -- at 9:15 -- for our elementary schools and they will exit five minutes later," said Pickerington School Board President Cathy Oleshef- ski.
Pickerington Superintendent Rob Walker said the modifications are designed to provide bus drivers more time to finish transporting older students before beginning K-4 routes both before and after school.
"We are starting and ending five minutes later for grades K-4 this school year to allow for additional 'recovery time' following the secondary bus run before the elementary bus run," Walker said.
"This allows our buses from the secondary run, which takes place before the elementary run, to arrive on time before (and) after school.
"All last year, we were arriving five minutes late to school and delivering the students home five minutes late. This change will address this problem."
Start times for the district's middle, junior high and high schools will not be changed in 2013-14.
This year, middle school classes will be held from 8:40 a.m. to 3:05 p.m.
The district's two junior high schools will be in session from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
High school classes will begin at 7:20 a.m. and end at 1:55 p.m.
