Pickerington high school students and their parents next week can get a jump on the upcoming school year during upcoming "Welcome Days."

Parents and students can take care of most -- if not all -- first semester fees, class scheduling issues, school pictures and emergency medical notifications during Welcome Days, to be held Aug. 8 and 9 at Pickerington High School Central and Pickerington High School North.

"This is now the fourth year we've been doing this," said Central Principal Zack Howard.

"First and foremost, we get the opportunity to collect every medical authorization form we need so we can start the school year off a little safer.

"All students also are eager to get their schedules," Howard said.

"This provides the opportunity to get their schedules and make any last-minutes changes that are needed."

Classes in the Pickerington Local School District begin Aug. 19.

All students attending the high schools in 2013-14 must submit emergency medical authorization forms signed by their parents or guardians prior to being permitted to pick up their schedules.

In addition to crossing that task off the list and getting their class schedules, students can have class pictures taken during Welcome Days, and they can walk the high schools to familiarize themselves with the buildings and where their classes will be.

Additionally, students can obtain their identification cards, collect class books and learn about opportunities to join various clubs and other school-related organizations.

"It takes that first week of school and allows us to be a little more academic," said North Principal Kiya Hunt. "It takes care of some of that bookkeeping."

Central's Welcome Days schedule is:

AUG. 8:

* 12th grade, 8 to 11 a.m.

* 11th grade, noon to 3 p.m.

AUG. 9:

* 10th grade, 8 to 11 a.m.

* Ninth grade, noon to 3 p.m.

* All juniors, and freshmen with birthdays April through June, noon to 3 p.m.

* Freshman Opportunity to Grow (FOG) will be held for all ninth-grade students from 8 to 11 a.m. with lunch provided.

* All sophomores, and freshmen with birthdays July through September.

* All freshmen with birthdays October through December.

North also will host a new student and freshman informational meeting for students and parents at 6 p.m. Aug. 15 in the school's Performing Arts Center.

"This will be a brief presentation by the administration and school counselors regarding various aspects of student life at PHSN," Hunt said.

Additionally, North will host an open house for parents from 5 to 7 p.m. Aug. 21.

"That will allow parents to come in and meet their students' teachers," Hunt said.

Central will hold open house from 5 to 7 p.m. Aug. 22

Central's freshmen and new student orientation will take place at 6 p.m. Aug. 22 at the high school.

"We will have an open house where all our teachers will be back," Howard said.
