Violet Township has commenced the process of reviewing applications for the position of fiscal officer now that current officeholder Chris Smith has submitted his resignation.
The Violet Township Board of Trustees unanimously voted to accept, with regret, Smith's resignation at its Dec. 18 meeting.
The resignation will not go into effect, however, until Jan. 31.
Smith was elected to the position in November 2011.
He could not be reached for comment but is reportedly leaving the township to pursue other opportunities.
The trustees will be accepting resumes from qualified Violet Township residents for the position.
The applicant chosen will be appointed to the position for the remainder of Smith's term, which ends March 31, 2016.
Violet Township Trustee Terry Dunlap Sr. said the person appointed would then have to run for re-election for a new term in 2016.
"This is a very important position which requires the person to be able to submit and administer annual budgets, properly expend public funds, make payroll, pay all township bills approved by the trustees and maintain personnel records," Dunlap said.
"Additionally, they are the keeper of the township records, provide minutes of all official meetings, as well as invest township funds to the best interest of the citizens, and many other duties as described in the Ohio Revised Code," he said.
Dunlap said the trustees will start reviewing applications as they are received so that "hopefully" an appointment can be made effective Feb. 1.
The Violet Township Administrative offices will be accepting resumes through 4 p.m. Jan. 17.
Applicants are requested to put resumes in a sealed envelope marked "Fiscal Officer" and addressed to: The Violet Township Board of Trustees, Violet Township Administrative Offices, 12970 Rustic Drive, Pickerington, Ohio 43147.
